Many times in church we focus on the feel-good sides of the Bible’s standout characters, like Abraham and Sarah: their incredible journeys, their unique faith, the wonderous promises God made to them. But there’s a twist to their story—another character in the plot—someone who often times gets overlooked. Her name is Hagar.
Hers is a story of demotion, disillusionment, and distress. Thankfully it doesn’t end there. Despite her ongoing frustration, the Lord continues to meet with her, rescue her, and bring her life-giving water in the wilderness. God the Father graciously leads Hagar from the dry desert of loneliness into a sea of security where she can confidently say:
You are the God who sees me.
